How Stress Affects Hormones in Women (And Why You Don’t Feel Like Yourself)

Have you ever had a phase where you just don’t feel like yourself?

♥ Low energy.
♥ Poor sleep.
♥ More cravings.
♥ Feeling more irritable or overwhelmed.

It’s easy to think:

“Something’s off with my hormones.”

And while hormones are probably involved — one of the most common drivers is often overlooked:

Stress.

This blog looks at how stress affects hormones in women. I'll cover why it happens, what might cause it and what you can do about it

What Is The Stress Hormone Cortisol?

Your body responds to stress by releasing a hormone called cortisol.

In the short term, cortisol is actually pretty helpful. It is designed to help you stay alert, focused and able to respond to challenges....all very important stuff when things are difficult and you need to battle.

BUT, when stress becomes ongoing (which is unfortunately very common in our lives these days), cortisol stays elevated — and this is where it begins to affect other areas of your health.

Stress Isn't Just "Being Very Busy"

How stress affects hormones in womenStress isn’t only about work pressure or a busy schedule.

Your body perceives stress from many different sources, including:

  • Poor sleep
  • Skipping meals
  • Blood sugar highs and crashes
  • Over-exercising
  • Ongoing mental load
  • Caffeine on an empty stomach
  • High sugar or very carb-heavy diets
  • Excess alcohol
  • High exposure to toxins (plastics, pesticides, fumes etc)

Your body cannot and does not distinguish between these.

It responds to all of them in exactly the same way — by increasing your cortisol. This is a hugely frustrating element of us humans - our environment has evolved so much over....but how our body's function and that primal stress reaction has not evolved at all

How Stress Affects Hormones In Women

When cortisol is elevated for longer periods, it starts to influence multiple systems.

Blood Sugar & Cravings

Higher cortisol can:

This is why you might find yourself reaching for quick energy, especially in the afternoon.

Reproductive Hormones

Stress can affect progesterone and disrupt hormonal balance.

This may show up as:

  • PMS and period fatigue
  • Irregular cycles
  • Mood changes
  • Feeling more emotionally reactive

Thyroid Function

Chronic stress can also impact the thyroid.

This can contribute to:

  • Low energy
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • A general sense of sluggishness

Why You Might Not Feel Like Yourself

When all of these systems are affected at once, it can feel like something is “off.”

But it’s rarely just one hormone.

It’s the combined effect of:

  • Cortisol
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Reproductive hormones
  • Thyroid function

All responding to your current lifestyle and stress load. Thankfully even addressing one element may help significantly.

How to Support Hormones During Stress

foundations

The good news is you don’t need to remove stress completely (which mostly isn’t realistic anyway if your life is anything like mine!).

But you can support how your body responds to it.

Start with these solid foundations:

✔ Eat regular, balanced meals
✔ Include protein with meals
✔ Support stable blood sugar
✔ Prioritise sleep where you can
✔ Build in small moments of recovery

Trust me - These simple changes can have a powerful impact on energy, cravings and overall hormone balance.

If This All Sounds Familiar

If you’re feeling more tired, craving sugar, or just not quite yourself…
